Do I have to disclose my disability to my employer?
No — disclosure is voluntary. You're never required to tell an employer you have a disability. The one practical catch: to get a reasonable accommodation, you have to disclose enough to ask for it — an employer can't accommodate a limitation it doesn't know about. But you control the timing, you can tell just HR or your manager rather than everyone, and you don't have to name a diagnosis — only the limitation and what helps. Before a job offer, employers generally can't even ask.
While you're applying or interviewing
The ADA bars employers from asking disability-related questions or requiring a medical exam before a conditional job offer. So you generally don't disclose when you apply or interview — and they can't make you. (EEOC guidance on pre-employment disability-related inquiries.)
When you want an accommodation
There's no general duty to disclose — but an accommodation is request-driven. To start the "interactive process," you have to let your employer know you have a medical condition that needs an adjustment. You don't need special words or a diagnosis — you need to connect a limitation to a change that would help. (And they generally can't require your specific diagnosis to do it.)
Who actually needs to know
You can disclose to HR or a supervisor — not your whole team. Under the ADA, any medical information you share must be kept confidential and stored separately from your personnel file.
The timing is yours
You can disclose when you apply (rare), after an offer, when you start, or years into the job when a need first comes up. There's no deadline — though raising it before a performance problem is usually far more protective than after one.
The trade-off, plainly
Disclosing unlocks legal protection and the right to accommodations; staying private keeps it to yourself but means your employer has no obligation to accommodate something it doesn't know about. There's no single right answer — it's your call, and you can make it one person at a time.
